Review Text

  • By Caroline Wood on 10 October 2013

A very useful book for PhD students, a good idea to read it before you start.Chapters include information on time management, reading the literature, writing a thesis and establishing good relations with your superviser. There are also chapters for planning your career beyond a PhD.

At 51 years of age it's a little late in the day for me to set out to become a principal investigator in a scientific research establishment. In reality I set out on that journey aged 24 and all I can say is I wish I'd read this book first. It's very accessible and full of wisdom. So if you want an academic career by taking the PhD route I'm sure you will gain enormously from Phil Dee's insights. At least it's given me an inkling of where I went wrong and why others succeeded where I failed.
